Counting is answering "how many?" for any group of individual items.

When learning to count, three separate concepts are required:

  1. The names of the numbers (first spoken, then written) must be known in the correct order.
  2. Each item is counted once (and only once) with a corresponding step to the next number (in order) from the list.
  3. The final number used is the total number of items that has been counted.

This table shows the first 10 counting numbers and zero. The digits and words in this table are the most common in English. Different languages and number base systems can also be used.
