A ratio is a comparison made between two or more numbers. It can be expressed in colon and fraction forms as a division, like for example:

The ratio of cats to dogs was 6 : 7.
The ratio of cats to total animals was 6 : 13.
6/13 of the animals were cats.

The ratio is frequently used in the proportion where there's a comparison between two ratios. In the ratio the first term is called antecedent followed by the consequent, so that means in a:b the antecedent is a and the consequent is b.
