Independent variable

An independent variable is the variable in a function that is operated on, or the input in the function. When
$f(x)=y$
$x$ is the independent variable and $y$ is the dependent variable. Time is commonly used as the independent variable in functions modelling real-world events.

Example

$y=x^2$ Here, $x$ is the independent variable while $y$ is the dependent variable.
